Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’ was the first rap song to ever win an Academy Award. It was certified quintuple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. And Rolling Stone included it in the upper crust of its ‘500 Greatest Songs Of All Time’ list.
But today, in 2017, this is all secondary information – because over the past few years the weird and wonderful washing machine that is the Internet has eroded Marshall Mathers’ timeless track down into two iconic words:
It’s a word pairing that has become the veritable ‘cellar door’ of modern pop music: a simple, prosaic phrase that could easily be the title of Eminem’s autobiography; the etching on his tombstone. Or, as fate would have it, the name of his brand new pop-up shop.
The rapper opened ‘Mom’s Spaghetti’ diner in Detroit over the weekend to support the launch of his new album Revival. The temporary restaurant/merch store was fittingly located in Detroit’s Shelter Club, more commonly known as that venue where Slim spews up the world-famous spag in the 8 Mile film.
“Come vomit up some spaghetti with me this weekend at our official #Revival pop up” he Tweeted, alongside a snapshot of the restaurant menu. “Exclusive merch, spaghetti and more.”
And it looks like dear old Mom is more than just a one-trick horse. Customers could choose to have their spaghetti with or without meatballs, or in the form of a ‘S’Ghetti Sanwich’ which… well, how good are they.
What really would have made this a special experience for fans would be if Eminem had laced the spaghetti with something like ipecac syrup, giving everyone the opportunity to vomit it up on their sweater already. We can neither confirm nor deny whether this was the case.
