Jail is a scary place. I can only say that with pure speculation because luckily I haven’t yet found myself thrown in a cell for disorderly conduct but in reality, it’s only a matter of time.
However, for some people, jail is practically a holiday resort that gives you three square meals a day, a roof over your head and an abundance of networking opportunities!
If you’ve got friends and family on the inside as well, then ho boy, you might as well just chuck a turkey in the oven and call it a Christmas dinner. Which is exactly what 19-year-old Mount Austin resident Thomas McGrath hoped for when whipped out a knife in hopes of going to jail.
Apparently, old mate contacted triple zero and arranged to meet with police after having an argument with a family member. One copper arrived, when he did McGrath asked why only one policeman had rocked up and proceeded to pull out a 15-centimeter knife.
The policeman asked him to put the knife down twice, which he eventually did, lobbing it in a gutter behind him. He then asked the officer if more police were on the way as he was placed under arrest.
“Tell them I ran at you with a knife – I want to go to jail,” the facts state McGrath said.
McGrath later said that he wouldn’t have used the item and it was all for sure, he just wanted to be put in jail so he could see his friends and family.
He was sentenced to a two-year good behaviour bond to run concurrently with another 12-month good behaviour bond, with supervision.
