The cold, cruel ring of an alarm in the morning is quite easily one of life’s most undesirable sensations. My dreams are haunted by the ever looming sound of my iPhones ‘supposedly’ calming wake-up tones, I just wish “By The Seaside” would take a hint and fuck off.
So imagine how poor old Jerry Lynn feels, considering the alarm clock that he accidentally got stuck inside a wall still rings every day despite it first getting stuck waaaay back in 2004.
The Pennsylvania resident was tasked with a bit of home improvement and needed to find a way to ensure that the hole he wanted to drill in order to install a TV cable outlet was in the right place.
He reckons that he tied the clock up to some string, chucked it through an air vent and set it to go off ten minutes later, which would let him know where to punch a bloody big hole in the living room so he can set up the outlet.
Instead of the easy breezy DIY job that would make his wife proud, Jerry encountered some issues when the clock came off the string. “As I was laying it down, all of a sudden I heard it go ‘thunk!’ as it came loose,” he said. “I thought, well, that’s not a real problem. You know it’s still going to go off. And it did.”
Jerry figured that eventually, the batteries in the clock would run out and he’d regain some sense of peace and quiet. That was 13 years ago, and the clock still goes off once a day, every day for 10 minutes.
I’m not sure why in the decade-plus since the clocks been in there Jerry simply hasn’t grabbed a sledgehammer and got to work. Maybe the clocks become a source of comfort for the Lynn family, a constant in a world that never stops changing.
