Generally, people are pretty averse to change. Especially when the change is tinkering with a popular breakfast radio show that people have been frothing over for years.
While Ben Harvey and Liam Stapleton no doubt expected a somewhat choppy transition into their new jobs, I doubt they expected to still be copping their fair share of abuse eight months on.
Amid a plethora of Facebook posts calling for the pair to call it a day, Ben and Liam went on-air as part of RUOK? Day to give listeners an insight into what life’s been like for the boys over the last few months.
Liam told listeners that “there is sometimes a fresh can of hate that you’ve got to open up every day, and it definitely wears you down,” and “I can honestly say I’ve had nights where I’ve cried myself to sleep because of stuff like that.”
He also spoke about how he’d been confronted by Triple J fans who told him how useless he was, and how it made him feel his lowest ever.
But the boys were reminded of how much support and love there was for them out there as well, with an abundance of Facebook posts and social media messages praising the boys for their hard work and honesty.
It takes a great deal of courage to come out and talk about an issues that is so deeply personal in an incredibly public space. Honestly, props to both of them for one of the most moving bits of radio I think I’ve ever seen.
