We’ve made it no secret that the fight to enjoy a beer is a cause worth fighting for. Whether your thirst demands to be quenched when travelling the open road, or if slamming a few in the shower is more your thing, enjoying a beer anywhere you please has to be one of the fundamental values of a democratic society.
A team of students from the United States has endeavored to further this culture of casual alcohol abuse by beginning the gargantuan task of going where no beer has gone before: the moon. The team, compromising of students from the University of California, aims to brew beer on the moon for the first time ever, by sending a canister aboard an Indian lunar lander which is set to launch this year.
The project will look at the viability of yeast fermentation on the surface of the moon, according to researchers. It’s important to understand how yeast behaves on the moon, not only is yeast used for brewing out of this world ‘Moon Beers’, but the research will also aid the development of pharmaceuticals and foods with yeast in them, like bread. Sounds to me like a win-win situation, we get to drink crazy new moon beers AND our drugs get better.
Srivaths Kalyan, mechanical lead for the team, went into a bit of detail in regards to the design of the experiment. Kalyan says “It contains three compartments — the top will be filled with the unfermented beer, the second will contain yeast.” Kaylan went on to say that, “When the rover lands on the Moon with our experiment, a valve will open between the two compartments, allowing the two to mix…When the yeast has done its job, a second valve opens and the yeast sink to the bottom, separate from fermented beer.”
Sounds like we aren’t too far off from enjoying an ice cold one up in space. If Dreamworks don’t change their logo to a bloke sitting on the moon swigging a few tinnies, I will be writing a very strongly worded email.
