Johnny Depp or “Tim Burton’s man crush” as he’s otherwise known, has always been a rather eccentric character. Whether he’s entertaining the masses with his camp portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow, or if he’s causing a ruckus for smuggling dogs into our great land, it’s safe to say that Johnny Depp’s a bit of a character.
Interesting individuals attract interesting friends and the relationship between Depp and celebrated writer Hunter S. Thompson seemed like two people who understood each other easily. When Hunter passed away in 2005, Depp had no problem footing the bill for the funeral and spared no expense.
According to Depp’s ex-managers, the star spent $3 million building a cannon that was placed atop a 47-meter tower that was shaped like a double-thumbed fist clutching a peyote button. The writer saw it fit that his ashes were blasted from the cannon, telling his son that at his funeral, “You should hear his friends talking, hear ice clinking in whiskey glasses, and then this cannon blasts off. And that’s the end of Hunter.”
The details stem from a counter lawsuit that Depp’s ex-managers filed against him, in which they claim that his spending led him to the brink of bankruptcy. Other expenses include $18 million on a huge 150-foot yacht, $4 million on a failed record label, $30,000 a month on wine, $200,000 a month on private planes, $150,000 a month on round-the-clock security and $300,000 a month to maintain a staff of 40 people.
I’m not entirely sure he needs a roster of 40 people, maybe it’s to sit around and drink all his wine while hanging out on his big fuck off yacht. Either way, I’m down.
