Come Get Drunk With ‘One Day’… Today!

When high school friends Horrorshow, Spit Syndicate, Jackie Onassis and Joyride decided to team up under the One Day banner, their cumulative talents resulted in far more than anyone had anticipated. In 2013, the crew began throwing monthly ONE DAY SUNDAYS parties in Sydney, utilising big ass venues, great DJ’s, live graffiti, tasty food and free entry to entice all who were tired of ‘the same old events’. It worked, and since then the critically acclaimed collective have played host to some of the very best DJ’s Australia has to offer, as well as top graffiti artists and some of the most sought after dance floor space in our great nation.

Riding the wave of ONE DAY SUNDAYS inevitable expansion, the crew have made their first foray in the interstate realm. This Sunday at The Elephant Hotel is their first cross-border excursion and a prime opportunity for Brisbane punters to explore the glory of the event. With the One Day DJ’s Joyride, ADIT (Horrorshow) and Raph (Jackie Onassis) providing the vibes and Cutloose, Charlie Hustle and Finehouse on the decks, it’s set to be a sell out. In addition, the gang from Ironlak are putting paint in the hands of some of Brisbane’s best graffiti artists, giving the very first Brisbane ONE DAY SUNDAY the visual touch it needs. We had a chance to catch up with Joyride from Horrorshow for a few quick tips before you walk through the doors:

Tell us the ethos behind One Day.
The Google dictionary defines ethos as “the characteristic spirit of a culture, era, or community as manifested in its attitudes and aspirations.” In the next few paragraphs I will not only touch on the characteristic spirit, but also (more importantly) the characteristic spirit animal behind One Day. (A table in the smoking section sings happy birthday to Mandy, who has turned 23 as the clock struck twelve. They were two minutes late. I checked.)

One Day is best described as a kangaroo. A friendly beast who thrives off its fellow kangaroos around it, this kangaroo will gladly lie on the beach looking like a sickunt but if anyone steps to it their dreams are soon dashed. The kangaroo also possesses the inability to move backwards. Progression. Also I’ve heard that kangaroos love flying around the country to turn up with like minded legends. (A man squeezes past me, knocking my cigarette into a puddle. Very unkangaroolike behaviour.)

What can punters expect from One Day Sundays this weekend at The Elephant Hotel?
“I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations and you’re not in this world to live up to mine.” – Bruce Lee.
What Bruce failed to mention was that he set the bar so high that living up to expectations was a failure. Exceeding expectations is his par. We’ve taken a lot from Bruce. (Mandy peers over my shoulder and asks why I’m Googling Bruce Lee quotes. I respond by saying that she sets the bar too low. Mandy is confused.)

Who’s the best drinker?
Hemingway told us that you should “always do sober what you said you’d do drunk.” Hemingway was a mean man who would’ve been better suited to weird twitter. He also would’ve been more deserving of his subsequent accolades (or lack thereof). (Mandy is asking a new friend if she can buy her nursing text books. Suddenly I feel too old to be here.) Basically what I’m getting at is we are men of honour and men of party.

Joyride wrote this from the front patio of World Bar, Kings Cross on a rainy Thursday night.

Thanks to the One Day Sundays crew and The Elephant Hotel, we’re giving two lucky punters a chance to win a drink with the Horrorshow crew and a few Hotel dollars to spend throughout the day. Just email party@yourfriendshouse.com with your favourite artist on the bill to go in the draw!
