Between 1963 and 1971, film director Larry Clark (who would later become known for his films ‘Kids’ and ‘Bully’) was a photographer, drug addict and native of a fairly small city in Oklahoma called Tulsa. His notorious black-and-white collection of the same name was published shortly thereafter and portrayed his first-hand experiences during the period. Clark has been praised and vilified in equal measure for his work, but maintains that he “didn’t take these photographs as a voyeur, but as a participant in the phenomenon”.
Regardless of the polarised reaction to his images, Tulsa remains a painfully transparent window into the wayward lives of countless young Americans below the poverty line.
