Over-enthusiastic Snapchatters are the bane of my existence. I don’t care that you’ve got a big day of Uni and would rather be napping, I don’t care if works boring and you’ve still got two hours left and I certainly don’t care about the cute dog you walked past enough to sit through 8 Snapchat videos featuring you crooning like an overbearing mother. There’s literally no reason for me to be this informed about your life, nothing that you do is interesting enough to warrant 10 Snapchats a day.
While persistent snappers can be a daily nuisance, they’re fairly harmless and probably just want someone to talk to while they live-snap themselves taking a shit. That being said, some people can find the constant stream of snaps a little bit too much. Two boys from Utah in the States shot one of their classmates in the head and left her for dead when they became infuriated with her constant messaging on Snapchat.
Deserae Turner had no idea that she was the target of a murder plot when she was lured to a nearby canal by the two teens, who had previously planned to slit her throat but realised they couldn’t go through with it. When they met Deserae again, they decided they couldn’t follow through with the grisly crime… so they pulled out a gun and shot her in the head because that’s a way more dignified and respectable way to kill someone.
The court heard that the two teens were playing video games when they discussed killing Deserae. “I just didn’t want anything to do with Snapchatting her anymore,” one of the 16-year-old boys said, according to a statement he gave to police that was read aloud in juvenile court Tuesday. “Well, you’ve got a 6-inch blade, why don’t you do it yourself,” his friend replied. The first boy said he first thought it was a “crude joke” but they kept plotting and settled on a plan that called for him to slit Deserae’s throat, the statement said.
Deserae has since undergone surgery and is still struggling to complete daily cognitive tasks but her family hopes that intensive rehabilitation will see her continuing improvement. As for the boys, they’re still standing trial and will likely be tried as minors, despite how fucked up their crime is.
It’s mindboggling how guns are still so readily available and accessible in America. This is a crime that shouldn’t have happened and really encapsulates how fucked up the world can be. Next time someone pisses you off by sending a few too many snaps, hit the unfriend button and not the trigger, eh?
