It doesn’t matter whether you love or hate him, Kanye West is easily one of the most celebrated/disliked/meme’d about people on the planet. Whether he’s being circle-jerked in Kanye Kanyeposting on Facebook or ridiculed by the South Park boys, Kanye’s been at the forefront of popular culture for a long time. Kanye’s influence and talent hasn’t gone unnoticed… particularly by himself. The 39-year-old rapper and designer hasn’t been shy about praising his greatness, frequently likening himself to Jesus and other notable superheroes.
So it’s not particularly surprising when a life-size golden statue of Yeezus himself pops up on a Los Angeles street. The statue is titled “False Idol” and was made by LA street artist Plastic Jesus who worked in collaboration with Ginger, the street artist responsible for the many nude Trump sculptures that popped up during the campaign trail.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Plastic Jesus explains the concept a little more. “[West is] a genius at writing and producing but he’s not a God, and that’s where we put him. Until there’s an issue in his life or a hiccup in his career, then we crucify him.” He further elaborated on the sculpture’s message: “By all means, treat and respect these people are artists, but don’t make them into gods—because we crucify our gods.”
While Yeezy isn’t actually being crucified, his arms are outstretched, has a crown of thorns on his head and nails through his hands. Plastic Jesus seems to have spiced up the somewhat overdone crucifixion by pimping Kanye out with a cold as ice Jesus piece, a modest YEEZY Season 5 loincloth and a pair of Pirate Black Yeezy Boost 350’s.
