If you’re in Queensland and have access to at least one window, you might have noticed that we got absolutely wrecked by torrential downpour yesterday in the aftermath of cyclone Debbie. You also might have noticed that authorities were urging people not to leave their homes and prepare for a day of Netflix and pretending to do work you actually needed to get done.
Not everyone followed the authority’s sensible advice, one man has been charged with driving while intoxicated after stranding his partner and two young children in floodwaters – and attempting to leg it after calling 000 to rescue his endangered family.
At around 8.30pm on Thursday, the bloke in question drove his vehicle through floodwaters in the Ipswich suburb of Karrabin. After realising he was up shits creek without a paddle, old mate put a call through to emergency services. However, when rescue services arrived on the scene, they realised that the man had bolted.
Police were able to locate the other three members of the family at the scene, including a six-year-old and a four-year-old, who had managed to get to safety away from the rising floodwaters.
