Stefan Emslie and Mark Maxwell are two Brisbane based musicians who culminate in the quickly rising disco infused moniker Yale. From their debut track ‘Getaway‘, they set the tone for their sound, which gives listeners indie infused vocals layered over pillowy synths and driving percussion. Upon listening, it’s easy to see why we treat each and every release of theirs as a gift, especially given their offerings have also found a soft spot within the JJJ cohort of talented programmers. When we got wind of the fact they had remixed the ever popular Coma Cat track from Hamburg born disco sensation Tensnake, we had to find out more. “We remixed this track out of necessity really” they said on a fittingly bright and sunny Brisbane day. “We needed another song for our debut at Parklife and we wanted something that would be both fun to play and that would really get the crowd going” the two producers went on to explain, surmising “it’s really exciting to see the crowd’s reaction when we drop into the second break”. It didn’t take much of a test run of the song to realise the crowds reaction would have being joyful to watch, with the extremely well executed rework getting all of us bopping in the office.
The Yale take of Coma Cat encapsulates everything that makes the original a hit before adding some push and pull elements that increase danceability value and add a little bit more fun to the atmosphere. For originals, the two have a very specific formula of production that ensures their final product is polished to their ever-high standards. “After sending a chord progression or a beat to Stefan, he’ll start writing the lyrics and melody. We’ll then get together to work on the structure and before too long the track starts coming together.” the duo explained, “The next step is to head down to a friend’s studio to record vocals, mix and master” they finished with, giving us a good idea of the methodology within the Yale world. So whats next for this young duo? “First up next year we’ve got our mini east coast tour, through Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne” Mark told us, the producer of the group. “That will be followed pretty quickly by our next single release for a track called ‘Private School Girl” he went on to explain, suggesting there is plenty to look forward to from the outfit in early on next year. Exciting times huh? For now however, get the Coma Cat remix exclusively from Your Friends and enjoy the vibes we already know your going to love. Fan Yale here if you know whats good for you.
