In May of 2011, we stumbled across an up and coming producer who we stated was “doing good things in the way of calming shit down and cheering everybody up”. Almost a year on, and the talented young producer has completely blown everyone out of the water with his unique breed of dance worthy down-tempo electronica. His name is Flume, and you don’t have to take our word to acknowledge that he is here to stay. One of the big things on our mind, was how he’s dealt with such a rapid rise to success, especially given he’s yet to celebrate his 21st birthday. “Its been pretty surreal, especially with the response that the Sleepless EP received” he told us in a recent interview, pointing out “For the past 8 years I have been writing music in my bedroom for myself and friends, only now I’m getting paid to do it and thousands of people all over the world actually want to hear it”. Thousands is his modest perception on the whole scenario, especially when you take into account his Soundcloud alone has over 250,000 plays. “The fact that I can write a piece of music in my bedroom and have someone listen to it on their way to work over the other side of the world, is a concept I still struggle to get my head around” he told us, solidifying our belief that he was still coming to grips with just how widely recognised his music has become.
Of course, like most, surrounding himself with good people has made the Flume moniker what it is today. “Signing up with Future Classic really helped get the ball rolling in terms of getting my music out there” he was quick to point out, also giving popular media outlets like FBi Radio, JJJ, Stoney Roads and yours truly a shout out, stating all had been super supportive since the very beginning. On the topic of what was coming up in the future, we were pleasantly surprised by just how much he had forthcoming. “The plan is to have this collab with Anna Lunoe called ‘I Met You’ out by June, then some Sleepless remixes, and finally an album, which is about 70% done at the moment” he smiled, his words a testament to just how fulfilling 2012 is looking to be. On top of all this, Flume is set to rock Brisbane’s super popular venue Oh Hello on April 20th (event here) then jet off to the Gold Coast on the 21st courtesy of Bedlam Records (event here). When we quizzed him on what he had in store for Oh Hello, he quickly surmised, “Expect a heap of new music, lots of new stuff full of fun party vibes”. Unfamiliar with the live Flume show, it goes without saying we just can’t wait to see him in action. “At the moment I’m using an MPC40 to trigger clips and automate FX and a Launch Pad for triggering various samples, all run through Ableton Live” he stated as we wiped the drool off our notepad.
All in all, the alias Harley Streten has created in Flume is a prime example of a new wave of producers who stand to mature their sound at such a young age. Without straying from what he knows and loves, its great to see such a loyal and strong fan base develop for such a modest and talented young producer. Despite all the serious jazz, he certainly still knows how to have fun. “Thinking about starting the night with some smooth smooth gin and tonics to get in the zone, post gig tequila shots, then beers for the final mile” he said when we asked what he’ll be drinking at the Oh Hello bar, concluding “I have a feeling its going to be a big one”. Yes, yes it is.
