Pizza is perfect for any occasion: hungover, sober, drunk, high, alone, with friends, while you’re happy, while you’re sad. You name it, pizza’s got you covered, and you don’t even have to leave the house. I live central, which means I can even tag on a small fee to make sure my pizza arrives extra fast, under the wing of a sweaty high schooler who just rode his little heart out on a custom Dominos’ pushbike.
Though times are changing, and within the next six months, Dominos plan to roll out a fully automated delivery robot named DRU! It’s not an April Fools joke either, with the little lifesaver now eight months into development.
DRU can reach speeds of up to 20 kilometres an hour, has its own sensors, can navigate its way around gutters and curbs and dodge objects, measuring objects and distance by illuminating obstructions with a laser light. Oh, and of course, it’s got its own little pizza oven to keep your cheesy crust nice and hot.
According to Life Hacker, DRU “weighs approximately 190kg and has a maximum height of 1185mm (922mm with the compartment closed.) The body is constructed of ABS and urethane plastics, the lenses are made using PMMA (acrylic) plastics and the internal chassis is finished using aluminium and mild steel. It is water tight and weather proof.”
When he arrives, you enter a unique mobile phone code, which unlocks his secure storage compartment. Then, you refrain from vandalising him, or trying to take him home with you, and you go and eat your pizza like the normal human being that you are.
This is DRU and he’s the world’s first pizza delivery robot, being launched right here in Australia! He can navigate streets, calculate the best path to take and deliver pizza right to your doorstep. Don’t worry, he’s not taking anyone’s job, he’s just an addition to the Domino’s fleet! #9Today.
