Willow Beats are one of Australia’s brightest up-and-coming electronic acts. They’ve just released their debut music video for their legendary ‘Elemental’ track, which you can view below. Things seem to be going pretty damn well for the Uncle and Niece duo, and I recently caught up with them to ask about really weird things that have absolutely no relevance to their amazing music. Cool.
You guys make rad music, but if you weren’t doing that, what would you do to make a living?
Narayana:
If I didn’t have music I would pursue some other form of art. I think I could be a pretty dope magician.
Kalyani: I’d be at school yo!! Career wise? I have really never thought about anything else but music. Maybe I’d be a portrait artist or do henna on people at festivals and things.
You’ve got thirty words to convince an Eskimo to buy 250 kilo’s of ice.
Both: It’s a long term investment- in 100 years when all the ice has melted due to global warming it’ll be worth 4 times the price!
The two of you need to cook a three course dinner for Barack Obama, what do you make?
Entrée – Pop corn (Narayana makes a mean batch of pop corn)
Main – Kichari (Kalyani Nails this traditional indian dish. Its kinda like rice and dhal combined but its thicker and heaps more delicious)
Dessert – Caramel popcorn! (Narayanas got ya covered on dis one too)
What do you think of Kanye calling himself Yeezus?
Both: Each to their own man. He can be Yeezus if he wants! If Snoop Dogg can be Snoop Lion then Kanye can most def be Yeezus!
How do you both feel about religion?
Both: We were raised as Hari Krsnas in a really tight community. It was an incredibly beautiful way to grow up. The Hari farm (in Murwillumbah) is this amazing 1000 acre piece of land with streams to play in and mountains to climb. Also the Krsna scripture is full of amazing stories about demons, magic weapons, sorcerers etc so as kids the games we’d play were pretty inspired. To be honest we can’t really comment on religion as a whole. There are lots of positives and negatives across thousands of different belief systems. In our lives we see it as a positive thing though fo sho.
Would you rather fight a bear or two crocodiles?
Both: I recon probably 2 crocs. We could take down one each adventure time style. I have mad sword and Kalyani can change shape and size at will. So I reckon we’d easily win.
The other member of Willow Beats is in jail. What have they done?
Kalyani: Narayana’s in for magic in front of muggles.
Narayana: Kalyani has been caught holding up a bubble tea shop. “Nah I don’t want your cash! Gimme all your bubbles and I wont kill you!”
Strangest experience at a Willow Beats gig so far?
Both: We played a show in brissy a while back and all our home crew came to show support but they all got abit too crazy when we started and half of them got kicked out! Watching them get picked off like flies was a pretty funny/ strange experience.
