Coffee With The Dooze Jackers

These past few years have been exceptionally kind to the Dooze Jackers. Hailing from Montreal, Canada, the boys have enjoyed solid success locally and internationally. Their fun nature and cool personalities are clearly integrated into the dance music they produce and DJ. Their musical style engages with reggae, tropical, dutch-house, electro, and minimal influences . The twosome have managed to remix some of the most prominent in the business, such as, Diplo, Canblaster, PeaceTreaty, Deviance and a further extensive list. In doing so, they’ve also gathered whopping support from them and other first class acts throughout the scene. They’ve played alongside acts like Designer Drugs, Annie Mac, Birdy Nam Nam, LA Riots, Felix Cartal and a list that can keep going on for days.

Their freshly pressed EP is exciting and juicy as hell. Inspired by everything moombahton, the boys’ hard work in the studio has certainly paid off on this upcoming release. Made up of 5 tracks (2 originals and 3 remixes)  the EP is called “Why We Fwee” and will get you in a party mood like no other. The title track swamps you with tropical, reggae vocal samplings and hits you with a (108 beat-per- minute) slowed state of mind. The second track features local Montreal producers Elo!i & Heights and is called “Poppin Up“. I find this single oozes more of a laid back jungle, tribal sound and continues the nice, frisky pace the title track ends off with. The 3 remixes are just as thrilling as the 2 originals and shoot the forthcoming release to higher grounds with its exhilarating, beaming sound. The Torro Torro remix is by far my favorite because of its hard pounding “bass in your face” mentality. The drop to this track is outrageously sizzling and reminds me of why everyone wants these two for remix duties. Since the EP is out on Feb 21st, the boys of Dooze Jackers were kind enough to sit down and chat with me about a variety of things. Take a look down!

Why We Fwee EP by Dooze Jackers

First off, how did you two meet? What sparked the “Dooze Jackers” career path for you both?

J: I was producing and djing as Techjio before but I got a bit tired of being alone and i didnt want to dj anymore, i just wanted to concentrate on producing more. I saw that fred was just mixing and not producing so i showed him some dutch house tracks I did and it all started.
F: Me and Jackson, we were part of this blog called ‘ Le Mothership”. That’s where everything began… with all those party we’ve thrown with the blog. We had hung out together a lot and we decided to work on some stuff at my old studio where I used to mix. After that, that’s how the tracks “we love moogie” and “got line” came out !

Are you guys genre men? Or do all the specifics not really phase you guys?

F: Seriously, we love so many styles of music, we don’t specifically care about that. As long it sounds good and makes me and Jackson wanna do the boogie dance, it’s perfect !

3. Talk about the new EP coming out on T&A Records? It’s a massive release. What was your biggest influence on this one?
J: We wanted to make our first moombah track/ep big. And we asked producers that we love to make remixes. We worked hard to get some good boomin kicks, some good highs go get your head lost and some percussions to make your ass shake. That’s what “why we Fwee” is all about.

F: After listening to guys like j-trick, torro torro, Etc Etc, Sazon Booya, BIlly The Gent & Long jawns, we were like “ok we should REALLY try something different”. Moombahton wasn’t really something that we liked a lot at first but after playing some Slowed parties with our buddies from torro torro, we understood the vibe and really got into it. And Jackson came out with ”why we free” which is his first moombah track he’s done. After that, we just fell in love with the movement.

How has your sound changed since your initial efforts?

F: Seriously, since the beginning we’ve tried to support 100% the dutch house/ tropical movement because we’re really down with this. In shows, it’s always been the kind of music that people were digging. Now with some major changes with dubstep and moombahton, we’ve changed a little bit the kind of music we want to do for further releases. We’re more into electro house and moombahton vibe. For sure dutch house will always be in our hearts but we like to integrate more melodies and big build ups to make the crowds go crazy ! You’ll see with our new J-trick remix!

How often are you guys in the studio, and on the topic of studios, what do you guys use?

J: I work on reason 6, around 4 times a week. I am still learning a lot from tutorials and by looking at how other artist work with the program. We only use a simple usb midi controller and that’s it.
F: We meet with each other every Tuesday or Wednesday depending on our schedules. We got so much stuff working and we are so excited about it that we’re always like kids. Between that, we’re always working individually on our sides and trying out some ideas, synths, etc.

Has the industry changed the way you live? Do you guys stay up later?

F: Haha oh yes! Ask my girlfriend, she knows! When we play now, it’s like normal to go sleep around 5 am. There’s always a good reason to go out and meet people, drink jagger, chill at the club. It’s a different way of life that not many people have but it’s both our passion and our job at the same time so we’ve learned how to deal with this.
J: That’s for sure. But I never slept early before so it’s not really a problem. I still have to work at 7 in the morning 5 days a week so when I have a show/get drunk and stuff I get like 2-3 hours of sleep. Making music so one day we could just do that, that would be paradise!

Are you boys advocates of collaborations?

F: It really depends on the people and the track… We’ve had a lot of people asking us to work something out with them but they didn’t really have ideas or it was simply not working at all. But we’ve had really great opportunities with artists like Wes de graaf and Deviance that went really great. So I could say that we’re open to every demand and love to hear new kinds of stuff, we never know what can be the result of this.

Who would you guys collaborate with if you could? (Top 3)

J:
 1-Diplo
, 2-Munchi,
3-Bambounou
F:
 1- Munchi
, 2- JWLS,
3- Nadastrom

Now lets roll into some fun.. Are you guys good cooks?

F: For me, I love to! I really do haha. My speciality is Mexican food but I can easily do any kind of food! As long as it’s something that I like to eat I’m good to do it.
J: For sure I make the best grilled cheese in town… Nah am not a good cook, I eat lots of fast food and ramen noodles.

Where do you guys eat?

J: There’s a place called Baton Rouge, they serve good meat. Ribs for life.
F: For me, the best place would be a restaurant called El Zaziummm, they serve crazy burritos, tacos and all of that Mexican food. I love to go there and eat all of this stuff.

Other than music, what hobbies do you both have?

J: I play some computer games and listen to a lot of different music.
F: I’m a graduate graphic designer. I particularly love motion design (for example, doing teasers for events). Between that, drinking jagger and go swimming are some stuff I love to do when I’m not working on music.

Anything coming up in the next few months? Remixes, collaborations, gigs you both are excited about?

J: Something huge. Moombah style.

F: Collabs with Wes De Graaf, Big Dope P, Tambour Battant. Remixes for J-trick, Dabin, Mr. Vega. Also a big big project that we’re working on that we can’t talk about for now but you’ll know very soon.

Thank you guys for the time, it was so cool to sit down and chat with you guys! Any final message to your fans and readers around the globe?

We wanted to say big big love to everyone that has supported us all along our way until now and big love to you guys for this interview, it really means a lot! Big shout out to all the people we’ve worked with and those who we’re going to do something with really soon!
