The moment we received a promo of South American born Athalia’s brilliant, soothing audio – we fell in love. Currently residing in Melbourne, the relative newcomer records in her 4×3 bedroom with her cat, drawing inspirations from everything hip-hop, soul funk, jazz and the complete Jamiroquai discography. “My music is a little difficult to define in terms of style” she says, surmising “maybe because I myself am yet to figure out what it is”. Freedom is bliss, and perhaps its this very same lack of constraints that make her final products so warming. Already having worked with crew like Ta-Ku (HW&W), Insightful (Soulection), 3LLL (Junk House) and Elaquent (HW&W), its evident that her beats are in good hands. She’s recently dropped a few samples on her Bandcamp, namely Black Rainbows (free download) and Better Things, both of which serve as a good insight into her direction and talents. On the doorstep of her ‘Thought Crime EP‘, which is set for release on the 14th of May, we suggest you gobble these bad boys up and get on the wave before you can’t fit. I tried to take a little from everyone I admired. The off beat flow from MC’s like Q Tip, Mos Def, Doom and Pharcyde. The dark lyricism from St Vincent and vocals in style of AHU or Sade. Quite an odd little mix. Athalia
