A Fun Chat With Congorock

Congorock’s EP “RUNARK” (2009) on A-Trak’s Fools Gold imprint, was a major success in every level of the electronic dance music industry and won him immense recognition all throughout the DJ community. The following year took him straight to the top when he let loose “Babylon” via Fools Gold. You could not find a track that was played out more than this delicious goodness. It was blasted at festivals, big and small, by the cream of the crop within the scene. His tremendous presence has been felt on big time labels such as Ultra, Boys Noize Records, Dim Mak Records, and Teenage Riot. The sweaty, pulsing, tribal, electronic influence featured in his productions gained him remix duties for eminent acts such as Benny Benassi, Swedish House Mafia, and Mark Ronson, raising his stock to the another level.

Due to all this hard work, he’s managed to become an elite player in the growing bubble that is EDM, and in return has seen himself take on spotlight at popular festivals like Electric Daisy Carnival, Ultra, Creamfields, Stereosonic, Hard, Pukkelpop and numerous others. His funky rhythms, thumping bass, quick-witted twists grow stronger with each release. This past weekend he played in Toronto and was kind enough to sit down with me and answer a few questions for the site. Enjoy!

First off I’d like to thank you for taking the time out of your hectic schedule to sit and talk with us – it is greatly appreciated. You were in Toronto playing at  Chroma, were you excited? What do you like most about the city and your Canadian fans?
I’ve always had a good time in Toronto, I think my first show ever in North America was in Toronto too. I can’t think of any time in the last four years when I didn’t have a blast playing there and aside the club night life I think it’s one of the most beatiful cities in the world. I don’t know how to describe it properly but Canadians have something different, everybody is really nice and I think I can feel some kind of european connection with them.

You have remixed a wide variety of pretty big artists, so i’d like to know who’s another artist you would like to remix or possibly collaborate with?
I’d like to remix some 90’s techno stuff. That’s the music that got me into djing, and it still inspires me. There’s some amazing tunes that aren’t really popular among kids, but they deserve a listen, at least to realize where all this electronic scene comes from.

How did you decide on the name of Congorock? Is there any interesting story behind the choice?
The name Congorock comes from an old Dub song called Congo Rock from Sound Dimension. When I say Dub I dont mean dubstep. I found this song on a really compilation and I though merging the two words together would be an accurate description of my sound, which has tribal and heavy electro influences.

You always pay your respects to Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo for pushing you into this career path and really help developing your skills to this point. Who are some other people that have really helped you take your career path as a DJ to the next level?
The Benassi Bros helped me and still help me a lot. Me, Bob and them are part of the same management in Italy and it feels like a second family. I’ve been working in Benassi’s studio in the last 2 years and their help is certainly a huge influence on what I do right now.

How often are you in the studio? And on the topic of studio’s, what do you use?
I have a laptop and a home studio, but I also work in Italy at Benassi’s studio. I just bought a Slim Phatty and a Virus synth, and they are pretty exciting to work with, I am kinda getting bored of VST’s.
