Throughout the ever evolving realm of EDM, one would be hard pressed to find a person who wasn’t familiar with Hostage. His distinct, gritty brand of audio has seen his talents spread far and wide and one doesn’t have to listen to much of his discography to instantly see why. As this Edinburgh based purveyor of bass continues to rise, its inspiring to watch his talents diversify and prosper under the late night spotlight. This evolution was particularly evident in his latest EP, set to drop on Black Butter come January 23rd. The 6 track EP bounces and breaks through elements of jungle, rave, techno and tribal, culminating in one of the most impressive overall efforts we have seen since we started doing this biz. “I really wanted to show the versatility and full spectrum of my sound and musical interests” he said to us in a recent interview, further explaining “Sometimes I’m in a funky, bouncy mood, sometimes I’m in a hard techno mood, other times more deep and reflective but always with the dancefloor in mind”. If your yet to hear the EP, those few brief sentences are a perfect summary of ‘Desire‘, a release we can tell will sit in high regard for years to come.
Perhaps its his 20 plus years in the rave culture and wide sources of inspiration that result in such a broad spectrum of understanding. When asked what he listens to in his spare time, his answer serves as a further solidification of this, “80’s and 90’s television themes, jazz, old jungle, 90s rave, classic chicago house, anything really – fromTeddy Pendergrass to Sepultura” he smiled. It was around this stage we felt an urge to explore the fields of Hostage outside of musical confines, suddenly getting an interest in his pastimes. “I enjoy designing typefaces and making my cat jump around” he stated when quizzed on general hobbies, further delving into the realm of sport by including “I like ten-pin-bowling. It’s a sport you can eat and play at the same time“. He had us there, eating and sport is one hell of a combo. Speaking of food, could this dude cook? “I’m a superb creator of innovative and often thrifty snacks and regularly post these on my twitter, they mostly involve cheese” he said confidently, adding a side note that they often impressive his missus. At this stage, we really did think this guy had all areas covered. A fine creator of beats, a fan of the ever popular food-sport combo and the ability to make a range of cheesy snacks. While it would be impossible to tell the future of such a diverse soul, in parting he mentioned “Next year will be business as usual. Will do some more remixes and start working on my next EP“. Keep an eye on this guy and buy the EP via digital walls on January 23rd!
