A Chat With Canblaster

Canblaster is talent worth keeping eyes on for years to come. Hailing from France, he has been able to significantly stamp his presence onto the EDM community in the short time frame he has been involved. His individuality and vision come to life in his remarkably peppy productions. Completing remix duties for well-established talents like Boys Noize, Surkin, Count & Sinden and a heap of others have rapidly spiraled his stock even higher in the industry. Each time I listen to a piece by the youthful member of Club Cheval I can never seem to grasp how he nabs a good deal of musical methods and fuses them so thoroughly into a track. Along with his one-of-a-kind  productions come his intriguing DJ sets that blow people away from start to finish. Very recently I had the chance to catch up with the young don and get his perspective on a bit of everything. Catch the whole outfit down below.

Hi Cedric! Thank you so much for connecting with us at YFH, It is greatly appreciated. First off, I’d like to ask – what was “life” before turning to music? What brought you into this path of work?
I’ve been doing this since I was 16, before that,  Wednesday afternoons were filled with chess, table tennis, music lessons and my Saturday night were at the arcades playing music games and Time Crisis..

Who are some producers that you look up to and have really helped bring your creative talents to the next level?
A lot of the stuff I listen to is old, US music, Detroit, Chicago, Jersey, ballroom, old 2-step and UK garage. A lot of French touch (cassius!) in the early days. Asian pop and konami/namco sound teams too. More recently, people like nightslugs, James Blake, Joker, Rustie and Hudson Mohawke had a major influence. Finally something exciting happening around synths and melodies after a long reign of drum-centered tracks and tropical wave. Sound Pellegrino played a huge role in waking up the Parisian scene too. It is also exciting to work with people like Marble (Para One, Surkin, Bobmo) who got us into music back in the days where Institubes and Ed Banger were ruling the young Paris city nights.

What is a typical day like for you? Do you do anything interesting apart from producing music ?
I wake up late, and leave the studio late…

How did you decide on the name Canblaster? Is there any interesting story behind the choice?
No

Are you good cook? Do you have a speciality?
Sandwiches !

Top 3 tracks at the moment?
1. Darq E Freaker feat. Danny Brown – Blueberry (Pelican Fly All Stars Remix)
2. Vocal Drafts Vol.1 – Myd
3. Mad CJ Mac “Come And Take A Ride”

What’s next for you in 2012? (Releases, Remixes, Gigs)
Just released a remix for Surkin, did a little cover with Myd. Now I’m working on my new EP for Marble.

You have been a huge supporter of the Jersey Club movement for some time now, what other musical movements do you have your ear on in 2012?
Jersey was so innovative, talented artists out there. I’m still a huge fan of footwork too. Sam Tiba showed me this style called jook, amazing accelerated RnB.

Thank you so much for the cool chat! Any final message to your fans? Anybody you want to give a shout out too?
YES ! I’m back in Canada soon, this time with Sam Tiba. We’re already working our moves….
