We’ve all heard the age-old adage that you’re never going to meet the love of your life in a club.
Which is somewhat of a fair statement, because if you’ve ever had a quick glance around a nightclub smoking area it’s hard to believe anyone there has the willpower and emotional intelligence to stay with anyone longer than it takes to finish their durry, let alone a commitment for life.
So when a happy couple gets together for more than just a quick pash before the club closes, it’s rather heartwarming to say the least. It works out even better when the chance hook up you found only turns out to be a bloody prince.
Ariana Austin, now 33, was out for a bit of a boogie with her bestie when she ran into a fella called Joel Makonnen at Washington DC’s Pearl nightclub 12 years ago.
Apparently, old mate was quick to dish out a couple of cheesy pickup lines to set the mood.
“I said, ‘You guys look like an ad for Bombay Sapphire,’ or whatever the gin was,” the 35-year-old lawyer recalled. “Not even five minutes later I said, ‘You’re going to be my girlfriend’.”
Bit of a full-on approach, but it clearly worked out alright because, on September 9th, the happy couple made it official in a wedding that boasted at least 13 priests and clergymen.
Apparently, Joel waited until they were dating to unveil his royal heritage.
Born in Rome, his parents Prince David Makonnen and Princess Adey Imru Makonnen were forced to live in exile after there was a communist coup in his homeland of Ethiopia.
His father had escaped the bloodshed in his homeland because he was studying abroad at the time. The family decided to settle down in Switzerland.
Ethiopia’s monarchy was abolished in 1975 so it doesn’t look like Ariana will be calling any shots, but hey, who can say they married a fucking prince after going out for a couple of bevs?
