It’s Valentines day y’all, but who gives a fuck (clearly I’m single). From now on, each Valentines day we are going to wrap up our top posts, which means no one will care about roses anymore. This post is our 700th article up on the trusty virtual walls of YFH, so we thought it was a fitting time to go back through our offerings and give you a debrief on some of the most popular. We have written articles that have pissed people off, made people laugh, made them cry and even impregnated people’s siblings (false), so it was pretty hard to narrow down the pick of the bunch. Regardless, we thought about all the lonely souls out there who had nothing better to do on this day of love, and decided to compile them immediately. If you enjoy what we do, share this article around and perhaps someone else will too.
01. HOT GIRL DJS (WHO CANT DJ) <February 6th, 2012>
This one is surely fresh in everyone’s mind. We wrote this as a conceptual piece having recently noticed an influx of ex-models becoming DJ’s. Unfortunately, like any forum on the internet, people began to name and shame and things spiraled out of control. It was painful to watch people ‘putting a name’ to the article, especially when that name was someone we at YFH respected, but regardless everyone has their own opinions. 25,000 views, 530 shares and 190 comments later, the heat has finally died down. It was enjoyable to watch this explode and if we could turn back time, we would do it all again.
02. I DID METH IN A BANGKOK HUT <January 9th, 2012>
This one was a touchy subject for us. The article delved into the surreal world of the Bangkok underground, combining prostitutes, drug use and most of all regrets, all of which culminated in a painfully honest tail of one persons holiday demise. It received a tonne of praise, a tonne of hate and a tonne of mixed emotions, all of which resulted in an almost viral status for a number of weeks. It only takes a skim over the comments to see that it connected with people, and if anything, served as proof that bad things can happen to good people.
03. CAN YOU HANDLE BIEBER STEP? <November 5th, 2011>
When Justin Bieber announced he wanted to make a dubstep album, every man and his dog decided to write about it. We thought we would go a little further and delve into what exactly this meant for the genre. Were tween fans going to suddenly start claiming they are dubstep pioneers, or where the veterans of the genre going to pack up and leave? It was hard to tell, but as you can imagine plenty of people had their say on a topic that means so much to so many.
04. THE MODERN FESTIVAL BRO <October 18th, 2011>
This one is one of our most widely recognised articles to date. Everyone knows the shirtless fist pumping idiot who rubs up against you at each and every festival, so we wrote about him. The comical take on everyone’s least favorite party-goer seemed to be pretty damn relevant to the greater population. Not since this piece have we written an article where over 50 people feel the need to fill in their email just to write ‘hahaha’, but this sure got it happening. It was cool to see so many people love an article, and so few people disagree.
05. TURNTABLISM – A DYING ART <November 7th, 2011>
When Technics cancelled the production of their ever popular turntables, one of our resident writers had plenty to say on the topic. He used our platform to voice his opinions on the art form that encompassed mixing vinyl and furthermore, the fact that as we move to a digital age it becomes increasingly hard to find. It was sad to see such a staple in the evolution of our culture cease to continue, which is perhaps why this topic received such widespread attention.
06. HOLD THE BOMBS PLEASE <November 26th, 2011>
When the Godmother decided to lay down her opinions on popular Australian duo Bombs Away, we had never seen so much controversy arise over one article. From people saying we had bad taste in music to people praising us for our honesty, and even Bombs Away commenting themselves, this really did stir up a whirlwind of debate. In the end, we did feel that a duo who covered horrible lyrics with bikini clad babes was lame, but we have since found out there are much more pressing issues.
07. I RUN FROM RESTAURANTS TO PAY RENT <January 17th, 2012>
This article was the lovechild of a number of contributors. One of us had first hand experience with the said task, the other had a motivation to write about it and last but not least, Hugo had the confidence to place it under his name (thus copping any blame from angry restaurant owners). The articles in depth perspective on such a frowned upon topic was perhaps the centerpiece in it’s popularity, with everything from the dress code to the type of wine dialed in at pinpoint accuracy. We all had a good laugh at this and didn’t take it too seriously, turns out our readers did too!
08. I WANT A SOUTHERN CROSS TATTOO <November 3rd, 2011>
Southern Cross tattoos are used in Australia to show your pride for our country. Unfortunately, there has been a pretty direct correlation with the primal species of ‘Bogan’ and this nice little constellation of stars. We delved into the concept of the Southern Cross tattoo, asking why? We don’t hold a monopoly over a set of stars, and it can be seen from all around the world, so surely we could find something more suitable to encapsulate our pride for the land down under.
09. MY NEIGHBOR IS A WHITE GANGSTER <February 3rd, 2012>
When we felt the need to talk about our idiot neighbor who thinks he is black, people could really relate. From him doing stationary kick flips on his front lawn three hours everyday, to the idiot blasting out ‘Yonkers’ at 2am in the morning, it seems our pain was felt by everyone around the world. The upside is, he never read the article and we haven’t received any threats, so we are just going to keep doing us while he keeps doing him, and perhaps we will have more to write about in the future!
10. IGGY AZALEA INTERVIEW <December 9th, 2011>
From humble Australian beginnings to chilling in US studios with crew like Snoop Dogg, Iggy Azalea is really a light on the whole ‘from rags to riches’ statement. From her viral hit ‘Pu$$y’ to her insanely successful ‘Ignorant Art’ release, we felt a dire need to interview her and get a little info on what was going down. Turns out she’s extremely down to earth, super motivated and insanely cool (not to mention beautiful), so there is a pretty obvious reason as to why this interview went so damn well. Whoever wrote her Wikipedia bio also quoted us a shitload, which is bonus points right?
11. ROFLCOPTR: THE NEW DRUG <January 30th, 2012>
When we heard there was some weird ass new legal drug swooping the UK market, we thought we would do some research and write up on it. When we found out it was called ROFLCOPTR, we didn’t have a choice. Weird ass name aside, people seemed interested to find out about this legal high. We can only imagine it will be made illegal by the time most of you have finished reading this article, but either way it was a hot topic for our readers. Hope none of you tried it.
12. MAKE THAT BOOTY CLAP <January 25th, 2012>
When Brodinski and Gessefalstein began flogging a track with a notoriously catchy vocal (“Make that booty clap…”), we had to find it. Turns out it was the awesome tune by Kill Frenzy which was released on the Dirtybird ‘Hatched’ compilation earlier this month. It’s not often a straight music review lives up to its culture counterparts, but this track is just so damn addictive everybody needed a piece. If you haven’t got the track yet, we suggest you buy it.
13. THINGS NOT TO DO ON AUSTRALIA DAY <January 25th, 2012>
Australia Day, for some, is a time to become increasingly racist, drink excessive amounts of XXXX, do burnouts at the local 7/11 and just be an all round douche bag. For most people, this isn’t really the way we want our day of national pride to play out, but its blatant reality. We decided to give punters a nice, easy to use 5 step guide to make sure you have a safe and fun Australia day. Turns out no one listened to us. Fair call!
14. DRUGS, RAPE & COACHELLA <January 13th, 2012>
Our resident journalist and mommy blogger Carly Electric took the time out to have a laugh at the always popular satire site ‘Christwire’. It didn’t take long to find some hilarious comments on its twisted virtual pages, and perhaps the only thing funnier than the articles themselves, were the comments left by idiots who either supported the views, or completely missed the joke. Read this if your a parent who is sending your kids to Coachella, but don’t take it too seriously!
15. EVERYONES A FOOD PHOTOGRAPHER <February 7th, 2012>
After noticing that becoming a food photographer seemed to be the next best thing to a DJ (via our Newsfeed), we decided to classify it as a sport, smack some categories in and let people see what they thought. Turns out most people agree and if you’re not one of the kids who uploads every spaghetti bolognaise you eat, you are more than likely annoyed by those who do. People used to go to China and come back with photos of The Great Wall. Now they come back with photos of satay chicken.
