Hot Girl DJs (Who Cant DJ)

With the mainstream flow of interest in all things EDM over the past couple of years, everyone has become a DJ. I don’t use the term ‘everyone’ lightly either. I truly think that if you are trying to pick up a girl in a bar, she would be more impressed if you let her know, in passing, that you didn’t DJ. In saying that, there is a whopping 90% chance that the very same girl you’re trying to pick up is actually a DJ herself. So whats her story? Six months ago she was a club promoter. She always complained about the ‘shitty music played by the shitty DJs’ in the club. One day she decided that DJing was her lifelong dream, something she had been adamant about doing since she was just 10 years old. She went to her guy friends house and got a few quick lessons on how to match up the numbers on both CDJ’s. On the way home, she bought some leopard print tights, a low cut top and got an edgy haircut. Now, both technically and aesthetically, she was the next big thing.

All of this was good, but a club promoter who didn’t give a crap about music and only cared about how many people she was going to bring in was necessary. Turns out this was the easiest part of the equation, with 90% of club promoters following this model of business when choosing a DJ. A mere three weeks from deciding she would take up DJing, she had lathered herself up with cocktails and rocked out her first DJ set. It was bad and the track selection was evidently done by her pet cat, but she brought a tonne of friends in and they all danced. At the conclusion of her set, the promoter gave her another gig the following week and tried to take her home. The next day she made a Facebook page and posted sexy photos of herself and got 200 new fans. Psycho-graphically, 72% of these fans joined the page to see if there were more photos of this hot scantily clad female. The rest are her friends, who won’t ever tell her she can’t mix.

This influx is painful to watch, but it really does make the female DJ’s who CAN mix stand out. They are a sought after commodity and rightfully so. There are just as many bad male DJs, perhaps more, but they have more trouble leveraging their looks with straight, 26 year old male club promoters.

I was just talking about this yesterday after an experience. fml……
Its more funny when these girls with no real mixing talent what so ever go travel all over the state/country because they used to be a model…

This is why clubbing in Australia is going backwards..

    • Sam February 6, 2012 at 11:12 PM #

Brooke Evers is a perfect example. Girlfriend of one of the stafford brothers, model, now DJ.

  3. Storyofmylife February 6, 2012 at 1:22 PM #

Its a shame that other Dj’s (male or female) who are talented or who can at least play to a crowd are getting turned away so some hot bitches in bikini’s (who couldn’t event mix progressive house) can bring in all the dickheads.

    What happened to submitting demo’s?

I think clubs should challenge a DJ with a demo. Not just send me a mix. More like.. Send me a demo of what you would play at my club between 10 – 11.. etc.

    • Verity February 6, 2012 at 1:28 PM #

      Exactly ^^^

    • krishna February 6, 2012 at 1:32 PM #

Agree in every aspect. I think clubs/promoters are def losing site of that..

      • Sam February 6, 2012 at 11:16 PM #

Clubs and promoters are looking at the $$’s at the end of the day. They want people to pay to come through the door and pay outrageous prices for drinks. If the hot model Dj’s are doing this for them then their not gonna change

    • Cindee February 6, 2012 at 2:30 PM #

That is so true.. when i first started it was just the thing u had to beat mix .. now these days omg i have seen fade in out djs .. djs preparing sets .. a dj mixin on mixed cd and using the other one for a sample to look like she is mixing .. . unless ur a model i feel i got no chance .. even know the endles hours of practicing and love for it .. i sometimes thinking how am i going to get booked when this hottie is there ..

      • Ben February 6, 2012 at 3:27 PM #

It’s simple, club owners want what brings in money…

and sadly, most of the time these sell out models who cant mix do…

  4. Knovell Capote February 6, 2012 at 1:47 PM #

    Well written, and definitely true.

Dj’s like Fly Girl Tee (turn tablist as well as great club dj) get left in the dark because of this.

    • Paige February 6, 2012 at 1:52 PM #

Yep. Outstanding to see the process some club promoters use to book DJ’s. Talent is slowly becoming less and less of a necessity.

      • hijinkz May 4, 2013 at 6:29 PM #

thats because people are bred with no taste or any musical depth these days. peoples priorities are all fucked up. unless you have a pretty face and conform to the standards of dress you arent accepted. theres no widespread appreciation for anything other than whats sexy these days

No naming and shaming from our end, but love to hear what you guys think.

  9. It’s probably no surprise how many times people have brought up this conversation with me over the last 14 yrs..

Not only about the influx of pretty girls on decks vs skill, but in my early days, just the concept of a female DJ was shunned (I’m speaking here of the urban scene around Australia, Flygirl Tee & Dj Liche – mentioning you girls as I’m sure you had similar experiences..)

Either way there will always be competition out there male or female. I choose to focus on developing and keeping the skill alive for these new generations… Looks will fade, skill will not.

  10. SymBO February 6, 2012 at 3:28 PM #

Can think of one gal that thanks to her $10,000 DD’s she gets regular gigs. Can’t beat match to save herself, I actually think that she can’t count to 4. But she can flirt the pants off anyone. I wonder if their mother is proud….

Its sad to see girls that CAN DJ, submit a demo to a promoter who then won’t book them unless they get to see them naked or refuse to put them near a real lineup for fear that they will over shadow themselves based on the fact they are a talentless hack, hanging onto their early 20′s with no real job at 34. As much as a nice-to-look-at-DJ can be a handy marketing angle, if they sound like a cat being run over by a shit-rattler train everyone looks bad. It’s all well and dandy if they can bring 56 people through the door. It’s the other 456 people that came for great tunes won’t come back next week and your brand will just look cheap. Unless of course, that’s what you’re going for, then all the power to you.

  11. Jane Doe February 6, 2012 at 3:42 PM #

Did you drink enough hateraid this morning Paige?

    • Paige February 6, 2012 at 5:31 PM #

Sorry Jane Doe. I don’t mean to hate, but I feel this is a true and legitimate observation.

      • cloudface February 7, 2012 at 12:13 AM #

If that’s the same Jane Doe that used to “DJ” in Brisbane then her comment’s based on the fact she can’t DJ herself but she did the opposite of your article and became a promoter based on her ability to get all of her friends in the lesbian community to come to her gigs.
She’d give other chicks DJ slots based on their hotness/how many friends they could bring/if she was sleeping with them or wanted to: one night I had to setup the PA system for her and the girl DJing first turned up and I showed her the CDJs and said “So you’re right to go?” and she went “Ummm, no, I’ve never DJ’d before” so I had to give her a 10 minute crash course on mixing…truefax

lol just because alison wonderland is a sexi bish doesnt mean shes one of what paige is talking about . alex is a bad bitch and runs the places she dj’s – she pretty, really gets into it on the dancing front, is a good selector AND she uses cdjs/cd’s to mix a very ‘macbook dj’ oriented style of music

    • Aden February 8, 2012 at 6:37 PM #

True to the part of the comment which refers to ability to DJ; objectively speaking, as DJ’ing relates to an ability to exercise even some technical prowess. Case in point on Keesh is found here – http://www.mydjspace.com/keesh/ – and then have a listen to the “March Mini Mix” Just have a listen to the intro; and don’t expect it to improve from there…

  17. Talentlesshottie February 6, 2012 at 5:17 PM #

    • The Godfather February 6, 2012 at 5:26 PM #

In the end, everyone is going to have personal preferences on who this article applies to and who it doesn’t. Its more relevant conceptually than when you apply it to any single individual. Paige could have written this article from about 1000 different angles. For example, is it the promoters fault for supporting untalented individuals? How can we blame the attractive females when they are simply accepting a gig? Its important to remember that without money hungry promoters and a need to draw profit, we would never witness these fake female DJ’s in a club setting. There are two steps in making this happen, both of which are unfortunate, but a reality.

Such a downer for the real female djs out there.
    Ruby Rose = Horrible
    Twins = horrible
    DJ Bliss = Horrible

    • The Godfather February 6, 2012 at 6:14 PM #

Exactly. There are soo many amazing DJ’s out there, some of which also happen to be attractive. But there are also a breed of them who are just horrible.

  20. Pretty as = Complete opposite! February 6, 2012 at 7:07 PM #

When reading this, countless names popped into my head because it’s just so true.
My favorite club for doing this is ‘PRETTY AS’ in Narre Warren, where no-one there is infant pretty as and anyone attractive gets ostracized by jealous promoters.

Daddy’s daughter gets to run the promotions now, look her up, ‘Sami Lachlan’ – this is the outcome of poor management skills.

She is also in a group called ‘sleazzy and teazzy’ who are everything you said ; minus the attractive part.

    Way to funny!!

Any local dj you can think of in this category, I can recommend they’ve played at pretty as.

    Worst!

REALLY? I’ve literally wanted to stab myself in the eardrums after hearing Nina Las Vegas carcrash mix on Tripple J..can’t listen to the bitch without gritting my teef

        • The Godfather February 7, 2012 at 1:11 AM #

I politely disagree. Nina Las Vegas is talented in so many ways. Your Friends House supports her to the full extent, as does Paige, the girl who wrote this article.

          • cloudface February 7, 2012 at 2:04 AM #

Nice for you Godfather-nice disclaimer too…me however, I’ve literally almost driven off the highway from wincing too hard while House Party was on the radio…maybe her other talents include things I’m unaware of like juggling because her on-air banter is just horrorshow..point me in the direction of a decent live mix of hers I can listen to if you like because it’d take a lot for me to pay to see her DJ and she’s one of the reasons I don’t listen to JJJ anymore.

None of my comments are in anyway related to the writers or anyone else ascosiated with this site….

        • dings February 11, 2012 at 11:52 PM #

No way, Nina is an incredible dj and a total babe

    • Adam February 7, 2012 at 7:24 AM #

Nina definitely knows her shit. I supported her in Byron on Sunday and she nailed it. She’s not the hottest girl DJ but shes pretty cute and man does she have a sexy voice.. she is epic!

      • Storyofmylife February 7, 2012 at 12:51 PM #

I’ve seen Nina live and was pretty amazing but i may have been listening to the same mix on JJJ that day cause Cloudface, i know exactly what your on about. It was horrible. Maybe it was just an off day.

Best Female Dj’s i know (have seen live) – Minx, Alison wonderland, Hoops, Katie Karma & Miss J and Annie Mac (Obviously). (Sorry if i missed any)

    i love your friends house

  23. Teejay February 6, 2012 at 7:08 PM #

I agree with it can be taken from a number of views…. money hungry promoters / opportunistic business minded females…. either way, singling out individuals and sprining hate on them because they are doing well due to it is poor form. I highly admire the bris and syd djs that have been singled out above, and booked them for their ability and relevance to the venue.

    • Sammy A February 6, 2012 at 7:19 PM #

Yo Teejay, you really should remember that the comments on this site are not dictated by us, and we are not interested in internet censorship or deleting peoples personal perspectives. We didn’t single out anyone, so your comment is almost irrelevant.

      • Teejay February 6, 2012 at 8:49 PM #

i was just referring to the comments, i liked the article. i wasnt suggesting censorship of any type, was just sticking up for people i know

          You’re fat.

  24. Dr. Joseph Bloggs February 6, 2012 at 7:10 PM #

Step 1: Change all instances of ‘she’ to ‘he’.
Step 2: Print article back in 2007/2008.
Step 3: Realise that male dj’s have already suffered this.
Step 4: Accept that it will happen to women too.
Step 5: Start producing music or fall into a short lived Kings Cross residency.

Just consider that most major label acts don’t last more than a few years.

  25. Astrix February 6, 2012 at 7:11 PM #

Haha. Girl djs are sexy. I know alot who are great. They pay their dues and they’ve been rewarded for it. What’s not ok is guys assumin that girls aren’t any good because they look good in leopard print. Tall poppy syndrome anyone?

    • Paige February 6, 2012 at 7:14 PM #

This is an article written by a girl who wears leopard print. I know a lot who are great. And read up, someone singled out Katie Valentine. I had nothing to say on the matter because I have not heard her mix. I’ve heard you mix (if you’re actually Astrix) and I quite enjoyed the set. Don’t try make this into something its not love, plenty of other stuff going on in the world.

      • Astrix (yeah it's actually me) February 6, 2012 at 9:09 PM #

haha yeah it’s me! Did you write the article? People always get so defensive – I was just joining the chat. Overall I’m about love and against hating! How about writing an article that showcases the good ladies rather then bitching about how hot girls get more gigs. Its been done before. Did they single out Katie in a negative or positive way? POSITIVE i hope because I booked her for my party last Sat and it wasn’t because she’s banging. She kills it!!!! Kept the club open and hour later then it usually does. Top job.

        :D :D :D :D PEACE OUT LOVE.

        • Paige February 6, 2012 at 9:35 PM #

Yes I wrote it. I understand your viewpoint, but we have already done that. 95% of the articles on this site are positive. Occasionally we deal with an issue that we feel is a burden. Unfortunately, people then go and ‘name and shame’ and feel the need to put a name to the concept. Our opinion is just an opinion, nothing more or less. If a girl can mix a fun set well, this article is obviously not about her.

          • Asty February 6, 2012 at 9:59 PM #

I don’t know who this is referring to though. I must be surrounded by some talented bitches because the only girls I know who AREN’T very good have only been playing for a few months or so – and everyone needs to start somewhere. I agree with you, It is really opinion based. One persons trash is another persons gold.

Playboy Model DJ Colleen Shannon…. WORST dj ive ever heard in my life. a little background on myself, ive been playing for 20 years so ive heard a few djs in my time. plays a massive event at a club in oshawa ontario, the club brings in a line array upgrade to their soundsystem not to mention 6000 watts of power for her stage monitors which was on her rider to play at the club or else she wouldnt play and would still collect her money. first of all she was playing on vinyl and was making absolutely ZERO attempts at properly mixing her tracks, so instead she would slowly fade the level down for the last track she was playing and as the volume was almost reaching 0 she would press the start button on her next track which she had cued up, the whole time never once turning on her stage monitors so she could hear her live mix. not to mention playing the worst selection of pop EDM youve ever heard… how about some lmfao, then next track also lmfao, then next track also lmfao, then 5 or 6 pitbull songs in a row (not even prime selections). BUT…. the club was packed because shes super hot. BIG FUCKING DEAL.

absolute WORST ive ever heard. so cool to act trendy these days, innit?
please excuse me while i go and puke.

  27. Queensland Based DJ February 6, 2012 at 7:30 PM #

I don’t normally weigh in on these kind of discussions, but based on the DJ’s in my newsfeed that shared this article, it caught my attention.

I do agree that DJ’s who can’t even simply beat match (albeit male or female) should NOT be playing in clubs – And I also agree that “promoters” bookings “DJ’s” who can “bring friends” does happen (despite this not being in any way, shape or form, a new tactic).

    HOWEVER

There’s a couple fundamental facts that I don’t agree with at all

    - I mention in my “name” that I’m QLD based (although currently doing quite a bit of national touring) as PERHAPS in other parts of Australia, this is a more rampant issue. However, in Queensland, the ones that are landing more than 1 or 2 very occasional gigs (albeit locally or nationally/internationally) can actually mix a large number of the local male DJ’s that I know under the table.

    - Which brings me to my next point… A large number of the DJ’s that have been “named and shamed” in the comments to this article, can mix – Most of which, quite well. I currently run a clubnight at a venue in QLD, and regularly (weekly) I will have some bedroom DJ who’s been playing for 5 minutes and is trawling for a gig, come to me and start dissing the DJ playing at the time, discussing how “terrible” their mixing is – Despite it being technically flawless. It seems that this is what a mass number of the “negative comments” in this article are doing. Sure, perhaps their song selection/genre/direction may not be your preference, but that brings me to my next point.

    - Since DJ’ing became “cool” (as mentioned in this article, which i 100% agree with), the industry has become flooded with numerous terrible (often Male) DJ’s. Sure, they can beatmatch, EQ, mix in key etc etc – But lack the fundamental ability of DJing – Playing to a crowd.

Many of said DJ’s have got gigs for years due to being able to “bring their mates”, and also due to there being a massive shortage of alternatives for promoters – But now that these “female DJ’s”, who are willing to play “popular” music that people “like” are available, they’re getting all of the bookings previously reserved for aforementioned terrible DJ’s.

These DJ’s are often too “worried” about staying “true” to their “style” to consider adapting….. And as a result of the massive number of gigs that they’re no longer getting, their ego is taking a horrid battering.

Most of these DJs though, rather than admitting it’s being caused by the fact that they’re “not very good”, are choosing to blame their loss of work to “chick DJ’s” who “can’t mix” and get gigs “because they’re hot”.

In conclusion, I 100% agree that DJ’s should only get bookings based on being good at what they do – But a fundamental part of being a good DJ is having the ability to play to a crowd… Which is what a number of these “chick DJ’s” can do.

As a DJ, until you have a name capable of selling out the venue at which you are playing -It’s your responsibility to play music that the crowd at that venue wants to hear. While I don’t believe that it’s fair for promoters/venue owners to expect a DJ to bring a crowd…. If a DJ isn’t willing to play the music that the existing crowd at the venue wants to hear, they do not have the right to expect the promoter/venue owner to book them to play there.

No doubt, there are some terrible female DJs – But I guarantee there’s more terrible male ones.

    • Paige February 6, 2012 at 7:42 PM #

Great points. There is a reason I didn’t name and shame when writing the article, but it was bound to happen in the comments. Everything you have said is correct, but I wasn’t comparing the situation to how many bad male DJ’s there were. There are too many shitty male DJ’s to even write about. This article spawned from my observations of sex been used more and more to market music. I don’t see too many males flirting with male promoters to get gigs.

      • Queensland Based DJ February 6, 2012 at 7:51 PM #

I get the feeling we’re on the same wavelength. I guess the point I was moreso making is that I’ve never seen the DJ’s you’re speaking of progress further than playing a few shitty gigs at their local shitty club… And are usually only stealing sets of male DJ’s who are just as terrible.
That and the fact that most of the successful female DJ’s being hated on in these comments, can mix. lol

        • Paige February 6, 2012 at 8:04 PM #

Hmm. I think there are a few that have made a sustainable career off sex appeal. And yes, agreed – most of the people ‘naming and shaming’ are actually naming talented individuals who deserve everything they get.

        • tawhitti February 7, 2012 at 10:10 PM #

  31. Milli Vanilli February 6, 2012 at 8:09 PM #

My ears and eyes have witnessed so many shit DJs.
When it comes down to it, I would rather stare at THE TWINS play than BOMB SQUAD…
    Ugh.

Hahahahahaha wow… On another topic Bomb Squad degrades Australian music like an avalanche of douchebags! The world doesn’t need another LMFAO especially when they’re less talented by miles

  33. Carly Electric February 6, 2012 at 8:10 PM #

    Paige you absolute ripper :)

  34. Al Mac February 6, 2012 at 8:38 PM #

Coming from the view point of a “living room” dj who had tutelage from some amazing dj’s who used to come back to our place for the kick on and who ended up playing a handful of big clubs, I would be dead-set embarassed if I got up there and couldn’t mix. I once practiced so hard, I told Dave of the PB’s who I was covering for that I couldn’t mix chocolate with milk. He said to me in his Irish accent “don’t worry too much about that. Now, I’ve got over 100 guests coming, so I’m counting on you tonight don’t let me down!”. Well it worked! What were we talking about again?

  35. Al Mac February 6, 2012 at 8:51 PM #

Oh yeah. If girls didn’t have veejays we’d throw rocks at them

  36. REALLY? February 6, 2012 at 9:07 PM #

Naming and shaming top female DJ’s who are good at what they do and deserve everything they get goes to show this blog is just another writer with tall poppy syndrome and a bunch of bored readers who have nothing else better to do.

    • I have an opinion February 6, 2012 at 9:16 PM #

hence why you were just as “bored” as us and decided to comment???

      • Paige February 6, 2012 at 9:23 PM #

Your comment is so irrelevant its not funny. But for the pure fact of ‘giving you a chance’, you should show us where ‘this blog’ named and shamed a single person… I don’t think we did? Oh, no, we didn’t.

    • Carly Electric February 6, 2012 at 9:55 PM #

I wonder which female DJ wrote this?

  39. Ubbs February 6, 2012 at 10:30 PM #

Ha, really enjoying all the promo Your Friends is giving me/the site!

    #1 Internet Villain

I only asked to name and shame because, in Sydney anywhere there aren’t many girls getting gigs for looks, in-fact it’s quite the opposite and has been through 2011/2012.

    Anna Lunoe
    Nina Las Vegas
    Bad Izzy
    Alison Wonderland
    Astrix
    Katie Valentine
    Cassette

    Plus a heap more.

Think the trend of ‘hot chicks’ deejing bucked a while ago and wasn’t sure how relevant the topic was (in general) and was just was wondering who exactly this was aimed at?

…and to clear the air, this isn’t negative, this isn’t profanity, this isn’t a personal attack, it’s merely an opinion!

    • Paige February 6, 2012 at 10:46 PM #

I think we can agree that what you see as relevant, we don’t, and vice versa. Given 10,854 people have thus far peeped this, 370 have shared it and 68 people have commented (including you), we might not see eye to eye on what constitutes ‘relevant’ for a topic. In closing, every artist you labeled above I agree with you on, impeccable taste in female DJ’s. Look more along the Gold Coast line for a better idea of who inspired this article. Oh, and its Bad Ezzy, not Izzy. She is great.

  40. Blackhawk79 February 6, 2012 at 10:31 PM #

Top femme fatales… They date back to the vinyl days, and got skill pretty or not.

    Suzy Solar
    Jenn Martinello
    DJ Nancy Star
    Irene Pardo
    Jenn Marley
    Miss Nine
    DJ Fei Fei

    Examples
    Jenn Martinello
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsRZcYZoZlY

    Suzy Solar
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZZvgBO7E5Q

    Ect… Ect..

There are more talented, hot and not do hot femme fatales out there. They are just suppressed, or oppressed. By cookie cutter mainstream bullshit promoters and clubs.. Great post btw, just be polite, they are women we are talking about. Cheers

    • The Godfather February 6, 2012 at 11:50 PM #

This article in no way states there are no talented female DJ’s. It just draws views towards people who use looks to rule out the prerequisite for talent.

  41. Ubbs February 6, 2012 at 11:06 PM #

Whoops, yes it is… long day at work ;)

Guess it’s a shame your nightlife includes such DJs.

Should move to Sydney sometime soon then.

Great article Paige, I had to laugh at some of the comments. It’s almost as if they don’t actually read the article.

    • Paige February 6, 2012 at 11:47 PM #

      Thanks Sam :)

  43. cloudface February 7, 2012 at 1:38 AM #

Mmmm…the problem with DJs is even if you’re conservative with your estimates you come out with a figure of 65/70% of them being half-wits or egotrippers or opportunists so when someone points them in the direction of an article about DJs they rarely “get it”…

    Here read this idiots:

Insiders revealed the MTV presenter is keen to take “the next step” in her career and become a full-time musician, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Confidential understands Sony hopes Rose can mirror the success of spunky blonde Havana Brown, mixing and releasing mainstream songs into dance tracks and releasing them as CDs under a Ruby Rose brand.

There’s even a chance to segue into singing, as Brown did this year.

“She’s already got a name for herself that people will recognise and the right ‘look’,” an insider said.

“She dresses like she already is (an artist). Now it’s just about coming up with the right material and a market. Like house, R’n'B.”

While there was no confirmation to be had yesterday, an announcement is expected tomorrow

    Read more: http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/music/mtv-vj-ruby-rose-appears-to-have-signed-with-sony-music-as-a-recording-artist/story-e6frfn09-1226208608693#ixzz1lc6S3lgu

    *********************
Still scratching your head? Ruby Rose studied acting and became a presenter (that they call a “VJ”) in 08. In under four years she’s whoring about a dozen different consumer products and now she’s lined up to be a singer; she admits she can’t sing and she DJs off premixed CDs “because I get nervous” and now she’s gonna get herself a rekkid contract.
Havanna Brown and Emily Scot have set a horrible precident that the major labels are now using as a template-imagine a world with airwaves full of insepid recyclied generic pap like “Get it” and maybe you’ll start to get it….or you won’t because you still don’t get why being famous is different from being talented.

    • Melanie February 7, 2012 at 12:16 PM #

It’s all image! always about what you wear and look like and if they can sell you to sheep who are willing to spend their money

  44. Paige Santiago February 7, 2012 at 1:48 AM #

Shit. While I must admit I didn’t expect around 20,000 people to care about what I said, its flattering to know you all did. In the end, anyone who has taken the time to defend or even put down a DJ has done so in vain. Half the DJ’s that were ripped on in these comments are DJ’s I love, so I can’t say anything else besides have another listen. This article was conceptual, and if you’re passionate enough to whinge about it I urge you to consider that it was merely an opinion. If you cant comprehend that, I understand, and wish you all the best.

    • cloudface February 7, 2012 at 2:27 AM #

While I’m not trying to be an arsehole I’d like to add that 20,000 people clicked on the linked-doesn’t mean that many read it or cared dear…me I clicked it to see some vitriol and you played it fairly safe.
This is a topic that DJs/ITM users/clubbers with more than 2 years of clubbing experience or 85 IQ points have talked about for a while now-back in 08 a bunch of chicks started DJIng topless and idiots were all “yeah TITS!” and music lovers/those not munted enough were “erg-can’t mix!”; the girl’s still got attention tho’ and helped ‘put it out there’ that DJing equipment had got to the level where you could fake it and as long as you looked hot you’d be okay which is perfect for someone who likes attention and getting into clubs for free and as I outlined before getting a clothing line/record contract/apearing on a show that states you’re a celebrity*..

*(Emily Scot was on “I’m a celebrity-get me out of here”)

      • The Godfather February 7, 2012 at 9:56 AM #

Haha, cloudface, you do realise how much commenting you’ve done on this post. Clearly people care.

  47. kim February 7, 2012 at 8:50 AM #

Unfortunatly this is true, It happens so often and being a female Dj from Sydney who has been playing for 10 years its sad that it affects the real Ladies that have put many years of practice and experience. We used to be sought after and get respect from others now, most of the time guys think ohh obviously shes doing it for the attention. No there is a small majority out there that do it for the music because music is our passion. Its funny IN 2007, the scene changed, vinyl was no longer COOL to use, virtual mixing software made it simple for even high school kids to easily mash up tracks together, even more funny in the same year, International Hardstyle DJ ‘COONE’ released a track that would become one of the best known hardstyle tracks on the planet. It was named ‘Words from the Gang’ In this track, the lyrics tell the story (Read along it explains the change that changed Djing forever)

” I remember the day I first heard electronic music
I knew back then this illegal computer sound was gonna be my call
My heart got hooked on 4 by 4 beats
When house took his journey with Jack Chicago and Acid House

Now my heart is hooked forever
It’s in my soul, in my veins
    On my mind 24/7
I don’t care if it’s french-tek, hardstyle, hardcore, old school or jump

I don’t understand people who are satisfied with ordinary pop music
They just listen to whatever radio stations decide they should like
Followed by an overkill of ring tone commercials meant for kids
And my god, they like it!

Some people even think that house clubs are for weirdos only!
Maybe they’re right, maybe we are weird
Maybe this music is weird and maybe the clubs are overrated
But we’re in this together, we’re in this for the love of beats,
    for the love of loops

If you’re in the scene, being a DJ seems like a natural path to follow
Ha, and back in the days DJ’s were weird people who liked music in a weird way
Back then you would have to be a nerd to become a DJ

Nowadays everybody wants to be a DJ
Nowadays everybody wants to be that nerd

It sickens me, I hate those smart asses who think that DJ is an easy way to get laid
    Well… get a life!!!!

If you’re not in it for the love of the music, would you please FUCK OFF!!!

    Sexist much?
I can’t begin to recall the number of times that I’ve heard legendary international (male) DJ’s throw down train wreck after train wreck whilst headlining a festival or club night. It’s all about branding people… surely you don’t need a reminder!!
Dance music is sexy, fun, loose, powerful etc etc.
Carl Cox… after 30 years doing it the guy still mixes like a drunk Stevie Wonder. Still, he looks good… he shakes it.. smiles.. fist pumps etc etc… his sets are epic!
I’m heading out to see The Twins who mix okay before I bother to dance to the overweight DJ’s lacking a personality but can mix really well; Clearly the ones contributing to this thread.

    • Paige February 7, 2012 at 7:31 PM #

Congrats on successfully been the only dumb comment out of a 110 comment thread. I’ve tolerated everything else, but calling this article (written by a female DJ) sexist is dumber than dumb. Have fun on your night out, read a book when you get home ;)

Clearly someone at Ministry of Sound is letting his penis do the thinking *sigh*

To all you other djs who put your heart into your work, who live and breathe music and have worked many years for that break that has never come, working shitty venues just so you can get a gig, mixing tracks in your bedroom that are mind blowing yet don’t get recognition, stalking every breathing human possible on facebook to “like” your page, losing sleep cause the music in your head is overpowering you, begging venue owners to give you a chance…just one chance! ……. Sorry!

Clearly you are doing it all wrong… Remove your brain! Insert a couple of tits! and you could be off to a banging start ;) Good Luck!

  55. Not Jonny Drama ;) February 8, 2012 at 11:51 AM #

Ive been mcing for djs for a few years now and end of the day I can’t stand the guy djs that can’t mix but can bring 30 mates to a gig so they get booked every week. They don’t know the difference in sound between justice and gotye.

Guy or girls .. If you can’t mix then u can’t mix ..
Then there are people that can’t mix very well but just because they are starting out and love music , they are the People I have time for .

But end of the day I would rather stand next to a hot chick than a sweaty singlet tatt covered Uni student trying to look like the man . ..

The club scene is falling to shit .. U can put a mix cd on and have NO Dj playing at all . The only reason they don’t do this is because these promoter djs bring the crowd

It’s my Job to beatbox and cover up their mistakes . If u have a shit Dj at your club you can book me on rhythm_dr@hotmail.com Lol

Great article Paige. DJs have become like a Clint Eastwood classic.. The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. Totally inappropriate to ‘name and shame’ in this situation in an article like this.

Big ups to the many amazing female DJs I know – Kate Monroe, Beth Yen, Minx, Anna Lunoe, Sandi Hotrod, Helena and many more. Love to everybody doing it up for the right reasons.

To all the piss-taking wannabe’s, the retards supporting them and the promoters booking them… step the fuck off

  59. DJ WonderWoman February 8, 2012 at 4:18 PM #

CALM DOWN BOYS!! no need to get all worried.
Lets face it woman know what women what to hear so woman on the dance floor = men on the dance floor = happy full clubs :)

Too many times male DJs (NOT ALL just some) play for them selfs and get caught up with showing off but dont know how to read the crowd!!

So i say if the dance floor is packed the DJ knows what there doing as there job is to fill it

What’s worse than a female DJ that can’t DJ? A female sax player that can’t play sax – have you heard of SAX ON LEGZ? That shit is BAD. I’ve heard sax players play with DJ’s in my time and she is totally talentless – the only thing that is getting her gigs is tits and ass. She now claims she is Australia’s first ever female sax/DJ – kudos to you – now you’re shit at 2 things!

So what? Is it about the music? or is it about the image? I don’t give a shit whether you are a guy or a girl, if you are SHIT it’ll be obvious – maybe not to the dumb shits who come to watch your gig, but to the ones who you work with, the other DJ’s that watch you perform, and the ones with enough knowledge to turn around and slander the shit out of your name because you can’t play.

    • saxonlegz February 23, 2012 at 12:32 PM #

Cute how you actually took time out of your day to write this GAZZA,

Little do you know SAX ON LEGZ is not only a Female Saxophonist performing Australia wide but she Teaches over 40 students each week on clarinet, flute, tenor saxophone, alto saxophone and the bass clarinet.
She also is in her 3rd year of University to recieve her Bachelor of Music Degree.

      Kudos to you also!

      • Anti Arrogance February 28, 2012 at 2:43 PM #

Given your name was ‘saxonlegz’, am I wrong in assuming you just referred to yourself in third person. Not to mention the incorrect spelling of Gezza’s name.

        • Bianca M March 2, 2012 at 10:36 AM #

Whats worse than a cynical, low life, pessimistic, negative, sardonic keyboard warrior? One’s that are called ‘Gezza’ or ‘Anti Arrogance’ (maybe re-think your name mate). Honestly, do you guys sit around and youtube dj’s and try and act like chauvinistic bastards? Im sure you haven’t even experienced them play live because you’re too against the world to go out and have fun, but instead you take the time out of your so called lives and criticise people who get out there and want to display their talent? So some might not be the greatest at what they do but at least they are passionate and have fun. At least they dont sit at their computers with bad intentions of judging people they dont know anything about. Grow up morons. You’re not getting anywhere in life with these comments.
And even if this is directed at girls who may have boob jobs or are attractive, why judge on someone you have no idea about? Sax on legz, who has an actual name happens to be a gorgeous talented girl whos done music her entire life and hasnt once altered her body. She happens to actually be hot, and yeah good on her, shes beautiful AND talented. Maybe this is something you old fashioned men cant wrap your head arounds because you’re probably lacking in both those departments. Im not just a fan who thinks this either, Im her sister and i watch her everyday work her ass off to improve her skills and create a name of herself, which she has. Dont be jealous of her success, its an ugly trait for you.
The fact that this is also directed at girl dj’s is so derogatory. Wake up to the 21st century you bunch of misogynists.

          • Paige March 2, 2012 at 11:35 AM #

I wrote this article. I’m a female. I didn’t name and shame and I think a boob job is irrelevant in this whole scenario. In case, in your utter rage, you missed the point of this article – I’ll explain it in simpleton terms. This article isn’t about talented attractive women, its about untalented attractive women. If your sister is as talented as you say she is, this doesn’t apply to her, which begs the question – why did you get so worked up?

Let it be known that the real Twins DO NOT enter into mindless defamatory worthless chit chat on bull shit forums like this. !!!!!!!

    • Paige February 8, 2012 at 6:25 PM #

You are one half of the Twins according to the email you registered when posting this comment, so technically they do.

Paige – This is 100% correct they do not comment on forums! This email address is not the twins!!!!
Did you bother to check the emails of who is posting comments pretending to be ‘The Twins’ and ‘Ellie’

    • Dominic Preston February 8, 2012 at 6:30 PM #

So if it wasn’t the twins originally, and ‘karma’ is officially the twins/ or at least their offical publicist. That would make your comment a little contradictory. LOL. Looks like they do engage Hahahahaha ah hahahahhaha

      • The Godfather February 8, 2012 at 6:33 PM #

Yep. The comment under the ‘Twins’ was not them, can confirm that. In the end, perhaps its insecurities, but we didn’t say this article was about them at anytime, and it was published before it was announced they signed to MoS.

HOW DID OUR NAMES EVEN GET BROUGHT UP IN THIS GRRRRR MAKES ME SO ANGRY

  68. you know its true February 8, 2012 at 9:40 PM #

Keesh written all over, she has almost 5000 fans (all guys obviously) and her mixing is that bad, it sounds like a demented monkey on crack is fiddling around with some broken CDJs (which is pretty much whats going on anyway)

    • Paige February 11, 2012 at 3:20 PM #

This is pretty harsh. I wrote this article, and I’ve never heard Keesh play, but after this comment I listened to a live mix of hers and can’t say she sounded all that bad. Get over the naming and shaming, this was a conceptual piece.

      • MELBOURNE BITCH July 13, 2012 at 10:55 AM #

ya dumb bitch keesh smashes her sets and gets the crowd charged she on the real melbourne level SMASH JUICE SHARD JUICE AND SHARD TFU WAH REVS JUNGLE CIRCUS COMIN AT U LIKE A BADMAN N TING

    • Michael February 11, 2012 at 3:42 PM #

have you even heard her play?

Ger your hearing checked. shut kint.

  69. When In Rome February 8, 2012 at 10:12 PM #

Interesting blog piece – for mine…things are the way they are; I don’t find that the trend bothers me as useless fappers don’t get my attention anyway. For every negative example out there (no, I’m not into naming names – cyber bullies are gutless keyboard heroes) there exists so many brilliant positive examples. Katie Drover, Jen Tutty, Atonix, Sorceress, Dani Volkova Dae, Nicole Moudaber, Lisa Lashes, Ide Engberg, Miss Kitten…and on and on I could go. But that’d be boring. And we have ACA to take care of that.

  70. Ellie OFFICIAL * THE TWINS February 9, 2012 at 9:31 AM #

Brooke and I have been in discussion with our management at MOS, and we are willing to do an interview with Your Friends House, to clear the air. Might even drop an exclusive techno track for you cuties. Can we make it happen? Love THE TWINS

    • Yourfriendshouse.com February 9, 2012 at 10:04 AM #

This article was posted prior to you signing with MoS. We did not name any names, nor has anyone involved with Your Friends House done so in the comments on this forum. As you can see, a tonne of names have been shamed by our readers, and while we do agree this is unfortunate, ‘The Twins’ seem to be the only DJ’s who have become insecure about this. As we said further up in the comments of this thread, the article was written from a conceptual standpoint, and there was a reason we didn’t include identities or single our people. We were not interested in this been a personal attack, but in saying that, we are not interested in censoring our readers opinions. An interview is not something that we are interested in doing and in closing, we would recommend you don’t let this frustrate you any further. Everyone has opinions and as you yourself posted on your Facebook page, ‘Haters gonna hate’.

  71. dantheman February 9, 2012 at 12:49 PM #

For every shit female Dj there are at least 5 shit male dj’s, so what this basically boils down to is, would you rather have a shit male dj or a shit (but Bangin’) female dj?

    • The Godfather February 9, 2012 at 2:07 PM #

Neither… thats the whole point of this article. We have enough good DJ’s to stop booking shit ones, female or not. Simple logic.

      • Sarah Vero February 9, 2012 at 3:00 PM #

Exactly, its the naivety ‘dantheman’ displays that is at the core of this problem. Shit DJ’s shouldn’t play in clubs. Period.

  72. Kate February 9, 2012 at 4:50 PM #

Hottest girls on the east coast? HAHAHA got to be kidding right?
I’ve seen these two “dj” twice and both times I would have rather listened to nails screeching down a blackboard. Horrible!
This will all fade and they will go back to being nobodys cause once these two release an album or mix and the sales fail miserably, MOS will be offloading these pair quicker then they can spell DJ.

  73. Josie Richardson February 10, 2012 at 11:02 AM #

Has anyone noticed the hypocrisy of this site? On one side of the page you have an article criticising club promoters for choosing a sexy looking girl over real talent. On the others side of the page there is a picture of two women’s mostly exposed butts pointing down the camera lens straight at you. Of course these women don’t have faces either, its all about the arse.
Umm, I’m a bit confused, wouldn’t this signify you are using sexualised women in in exactly the same way you are blaming the clubs for doing?

    • Paige February 10, 2012 at 11:19 AM #

Those girls are not DJs. They are models. Read the article again, and again, and again, until you comprehend what was said in it. Then have a second go at providing a half-logical rebuttal. There’s nothing wrong with attractive women who can’t mix, but there is an industry for them – it’s called fashion. The music industry should not bypass a prerequisite of talent because a female is attractive, or a male for that matter. If us displaying a photo of a girl requires her to be a talented DJ, then heck, we will screen them in the same way we believe club promoters should. Unfortunately, I can’t see how that’s relevant at all. That picture was chosen because the song in question is titled ‘Booty Clap’ by the way, we didn’t need to show a face…

      • Sarah Vero February 10, 2012 at 11:27 AM #

        hahahah wow. nice. well said.

    • The Godfather February 10, 2012 at 11:19 AM #

Yep, gotta say I’m sort of lost as to how this applies. Think you may get some benefit in re-reading the article :)

  74. Radaza February 10, 2012 at 11:28 AM #

People still look up to DJS?? I thought people only follow Djs for the free bar tab.

  75. Josie Richardson February 10, 2012 at 11:41 AM #

You’re making a comment on a female DJ using her sex/gender to get gigs ‘the promoter gave her another gig the following week and tried to take her home. The next day she made a Facebook page and posted sexy photos of herself and got 200 new fans”. Yes? Or have I read that wrong? I am saying the image on this website uses women in the same way. The topic may be different but marketing angle is the same.

It goes like this: Sexy women using their sex to market themselves to clubs. This web page is using sexy women to sell an article. I get that the 2 articles are completely different. What I am saying is that both this site AND the clubs in your article are using sex as marketing and thus it weakens the impact of the article (to me at least).
    .

    • Paige February 10, 2012 at 12:31 PM #

No, we are making a comment on an untalented female using her sex/gender to bypass the need to learn her trade. I think your forgetting that DJ’s are meant to be talented, which is what this article is about. A photo for a blog post is not destined for success, nor should it display any given level of talent. It’s just chosen to fit the article. You’re comparing apples and oranges dear.

  76. Dominic Preston February 10, 2012 at 2:32 PM #

Sex sells, that’s why twins are so good at what they do

    • Concerned Gold Coast Citizen February 10, 2012 at 5:17 PM #

Wait… you mean “sex sells thats why the twins are so popular”… clearly they are not good at what they do…

      • Dominic Preston February 10, 2012 at 5:52 PM #

Maybe you couldn’t read the sarcasm in every letter I typed

  77. Radaza February 10, 2012 at 3:41 PM #

By the way who are the Twins? Do they have a demo I can listen to? I’ll reserve my thoughts until I’ve listened to their mixe/mixes.

    • lol February 11, 2012 at 3:24 PM #

When you ask them for a demo, they send you a pic of them in a bikini

  78. Dylan James February 11, 2012 at 3:51 PM #

get rid of all the cdjs and bring back vinyl and watch 80% of djs fuck up every mix male or female! dont get me wrong cdjs are pretty cool but djs should learn the proper way before they just let the cdjs do it for them! learn to walk before you drive!

    REAL DJS PLAY vINYL!!!!

  79. melbournite February 12, 2012 at 7:36 AM #

I agree with this article especially after being subjected to keesh’s ugly mug being plastered all around melbourne, the girl couldn’t mix a cake. Its an embarrassment to the industry, my ears nearly burnt off when I listened to the set posted in the earlier comments. What the FUCK!!?!

  80. Tim P February 17, 2012 at 10:07 PM #

How about a bit less “interpretive” dancing and more focus on mixing and perhaps playing tunes that are actually good.

hahahah wow that video is awesome. I know we here at YFH are supposed to take a mutual standpoint, but dang that girl goin’ wild!

    • Corby February 18, 2012 at 1:43 AM #

that was the worst thing in the history of female Djs that i have ever seen.
not only did it hurt my ears.
it hurt my eyes. and damaged the reputation of female djs around the world forever.
also picked it as being old planet night club.
where else would you find such a disaster with a terrible taste in music?
get back to your dingas, and back to the music school. that was all time horrid.

  81. LOL February 23, 2012 at 12:22 AM #

OH GOD WHAT DID I JUST WATCH?

  82. Vince. February 28, 2012 at 2:43 PM #

I agree with the sentiment. But…. This sentence doesn’t make sense. “Demographically, 72% of these fans joined the page to see if there were more photos of this hot scantily clad female.” At all…

    • Vince. February 28, 2012 at 2:44 PM #

Psychographics when talking about measuring consumer behaviour.

  83. katie February 28, 2012 at 3:19 PM #

best story about girl djs ever written hands down! and the comments….. SO good. hahaha

  84. gertie June 1, 2012 at 6:28 PM #

Don’t like the DJ, don’t go to that club. Vote with your feet. Promoters will catch on that the reason no one is in their club is because their music sucks.

    • The Godfather June 2, 2012 at 8:05 AM #

We’d love if it were that simple, but it’s just not.

  85. Asai July 3, 2012 at 6:47 AM #

fuck all these people chix DJs are the best

    • Kate July 3, 2012 at 9:47 AM #

      you’re probably one of them.

  86. HouseParty August 12, 2012 at 10:51 PM #

DJ Katie Valentine = worst DJ in the world. All about image and nothing about the music. She is the whole reason for an article like this.

  87. Kevin p November 8, 2012 at 5:54 PM #

I came down from Sydney to hear DJ claz play. A lot of people in the Asian scene were raving about her! I’m glad I came! She’s a classy broad! She doesn’t wear next to nothing! Like most of these girls up there are doing
She knows what she doing and knows what a crowd wants
Is sexy and doesn’t even have to try!
Damn this girl knows her tunes! Gladly come down to see her play again!

  88. James December 6, 2012 at 3:49 PM #

Fuck me, there should be a ‘I have fully read and understood the article’ disclaimer tick box before you’re allowed to post a comment. So/too many people making wild claims of naming and shaming, doing there nut ‘defending’ these DJ’s against big bad YFH… This is despite the fact everything with which they take offence to is occurring in the chat feed… Switch on people, it’s a well written piece with a tonne of validity. What other people say about it is in no way affiliated with the original article. A large majority of you need to differentiate between an authors point of view and the readers. It’s really not that difficult. Pro tip: The article is at the top of the page, the comments section the bottom. Pay attention and read through twice to fully comprehend what you’re about to comment on, that way you will both remain relevant and escape my palpable scorn for dimwits.

    • Paige December 6, 2012 at 4:02 PM #

      HAHA. Yes!

  89. MJ March 6, 2013 at 1:26 AM #

I totally agree with the end of the article, Let them continue this trend when a REAL female DJ with skills comes in and kills a set or audition she is going to make the non-mixing model look like a thing of the past, Build your brand and stand on your talent and let your mix be heard that “Trend” wont last talent and experiene will always win over a trend.

  90. Mikki March 12, 2013 at 2:28 PM #

Wow! Haha that escalated. Kudos on this article! The response was a great read haha
