A Sit Down With Meech

Meech has made a solid contribution to the underground dance scene not only on Canadian soil but also American and European. The young producer has already released goodies on Discobelle Records, Dim Mak Records and a number of other labels. He’s played on some of the biggest stages like WMC in Miami, Avalon in Los Angeles, Social Club Paris, and others.  He’s gained support from acts like AutoErotique, Crookers, LA Riots, NT89, Sound Pellegrino, Youngunz and many more.

His brand new EP “I Want” for Demento Mori is a whirlwind of deliciousness. The 5-track release most certainly gets you ready in all kind of ways. I love the laid back feel the original brings to the table. He keeps the track simple from start to finish, especially with regards to the vocal sampling and the aesthetically pleasing percussion kits. The original track is accompanied by 4 remixes that will make your feet burst into a mighty fine groove. Each remix holds an essentially different feel from one another and in the end staple this release as a real cool and pleasant one. Since the EP is being released several days from now (FEB 6TH), I had the chance to sit down and talk with the man himself. Check it out below and don’t forget to support the EP when it comes out!

What was ‘life’ before turning to music? Tell us about yourself !
Music has always been part of my life, from piano lessons in the Dominican Republic by Henry Mancini (or at least thats who my parents told me was teaching me) to 5 years of Violin through high school. Before I started focusing on music I used to run a little photo-blog “DSRNR” where I got to document the birth of what eventually got tagged the “Queen West Scene”. The irony of it all is that it didn’t start in Queen West, true story!

You’ve been at it for a little while now, do you enjoy the industry as much as when you first started?
I would be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the bullshit & politics surrounding the “scene”. “Friends becoming foes & foes becoming friends”, its life and at the end of the day its business. I think that’s what has changed the most, EDM is now the mainstream! Before you had to mission to a sketch loft or some dirt-wet basement to listen to train-wrecking DJs playing “indie- dance”, now you can turn on the radio & listen to SKRILLEX as the soundtrack for Ford!

How often are you spending on the road these days?
It feels like a lot! Looking though my last few months, its actually alot LOL I’ve only played in Toronto a few times, while playing the majority on the road, either in Europe #EUROPA & Mexico #LAFRONTERATOUR.

Talk about your new EP “I Want” coming out in a few weeks… How did you connect with Danish label, Demento Mori? What was the big influence for you on this one?
I can’t remember exactly how I got in touch with Joachim (label BAUCE for Demento Mori) for the first time, but I was a big fan of the Conta EP by SunnyBeach HappySlap MardiGras & Art Nouveau’s Air France. Randomly I would send him stuff & after a year of sitting around on “I Want” I sent it over to him & he loved it. Rest is history! The biggest influence for the track was House Music. I feel a lot of people forget or don’t know how EDM got to where it is now and House Music has a lot to do with it. (If you want to learn more about House Music or dance in general download/stream BBC’s “Pump Up The Volume” you’ll be surprised at how much you don’t know or simply forgot!)

Is there a stand out moment in your career thus far?
Wow! Can’t think of a specific one… I’ll list a few that popped up in my head (cool?…)
- WMC; playing my first WMC was special & even greater doing it along side the Sound Pellegrino / Discobelle crew, tons of fun!
- Guest mix on Sound Pellegrino’s Podcast; being asked by DJ Orgasmic via a private message on twitter while sightseeing in Paris, was pretty special and beyond random!
- Social Club Paris; playing there is simply an HONOR. Once you start looking back at who has played there before you, you start thinking “I’m some random guy from Toronto, is this for real?”

Now lets roll into some fun shall we? .. Are you a good cook?
HAHAHA, I’m a GREAT eater! Just take a look at my twitter feed (@iluvmeech) you’ll see a lot of food pictures on a regular.
But I do love to grill & I’m pretty fucking good at it too! :)

On the topic of food, any favorite cuisines?
If its cooked properly, I’ll eat anything! But you can’t go wrong with Italian, French, Mexican (but not from Toronto), Japanese & is Brunch a cuisine? If so, then that will have to go to the top of my list.

Drink of choice?
Coffee, black & whiskey (Jameson if available) on the rocks.

Thank you so much for the time, it was so cool to connect. Any final message to your fans and the readers?
Honestly, I need to thank everyone who’s been a “fan” or simply a friend through this interesting journey. There’s a lot in the works for 2012 & beyond, so hope you’re all ready for it
